Born January 24, 1919, Annie Irene Virginia Howson was the most recent Montserratian centenarian to celebrate her 100th birthday last Thursday. To commemorate this milestone, a special church service was held at the Bethesda Methodist Church in Cavalla Hill.

Sister Annie, an awardee of the Methodist church of the Leeward Islands district and Montserrat circuit, is a pillar in the Montserrat and Methodist church community taking on a number of roles. However, she first got her start at the Cavalla Hill School.

The centenarian served as a preacher at the Cavalla Hill church for more than 20 years where she was also president of the women’s league for a number of years and lead prayer warrior and founding member of the church prayer group. Sister Annie was also known throughout the Cudjoe Head community for her cassava bread, ginger sticks and ice cream.

Speaking on the last edition of Family Reading time Sister Annie credited eating lots of mangoes and sweet potatoes as well as her strong Christian faith for her longevity, firmly warning against the consumption of alcohol beverages.

When asked how she felt about reaching the milestone, she stated, “I feel young…I thank the lord.”

“I give God thanks for my sons and all the people that helped me in the Golden Years Home and all who come and go and all who give me help in time of need,” she said.
